Workshop Georeferencing in the digital era 2025

In the fall of 2024, we held a workshop in Tromsø on future reference frames. Now, we are following up and organizing the workshop "Georeferencing in the Digital Era 2025," where we continues the discussions.

Let’s follow up the workshop in Tromsø and continue to explore user needs when it comes to reference frames within the geospatial infrastructure.

The workshop is sponsored by the Research Council of Norway and is a collaboration between Euref, EuroSDR and Norwegian Mapping Authority.

The fact

In an increasingly digital world, the accuracy and usability of geospatial data depend on effective georeferencing. However, challenges such as missing metadata, complex reference frames, and inconsistent standards hinder seamless data integration and cross-border collaboration.

Important information about time references and coordinate systems is often lost in the data flow from collection to the end user.

The discussion

The complexity of reference frames gives too many options and creates confusion among users.

The lack of standardization among different countries with different implementations of ETRS89, makes cross-border data sharing difficult.

Both professional and non-professional users lack knowledge about geodetic reference frame due to insufficient training.
